Twenty-five years ago, a remarkable journey began within the Paris office of the Confederation of Trades and Users of Natural Resources (COMURNAT), where a vision took root and the International Pernambuco Conservation Initiative (IPCI) was born. This initiative was driven by a shared passion for music and a love for stringed instrument bows.
Recognising that Pau-Brasil was an endangered species facing ongoing threats to its survival, IPCI's bow-maker members believed that it was of paramount importance for bow makers to support conservation efforts to protect the genetic diversity and sustainability of the species.
This was envisioned through partnerships with Brazilian environmental and scientific organisations, with federal and state agencies, and with institutions that could lead conservation and replanting efforts—all in an effort to eventually establish a legal framework for sustainable use.

Our aim was not only to help safeguard the existence of this tree but also to raise international awareness about Pau-Brasil.
Over the ensuing 25 years, we faced challenges head-on, explored uncharted paths, and experienced both successes and setbacks. The history of IPCI is one of global collaboration, lessons learned, and continued determination. We have not only planted trees but also, through connections forged in Brazil and worldwide, built a broad and committed base of support for efforts to save this unique and special tree.
Today, IPCI stands at the dawn of a new chapter. The experiences of the past 25 years form the bedrock upon which we are trying to do our part to help secure the future of the Pau-Brasil tree. Through this book, we aim not only to acknowledge past achievements but also to gain a clearer perspective on future challenges and opportunities.

May this book not only recount the story of IPCI but also offer some inspiration for all who advocate for the preservation of nature and our cultures. It is an invitation to collectively forge a sustainable future—for nature, music, and humankind.
